The average lifespan of a semi-trailer in North America is between 10 to 15 years, depending on factors like maintenance, road conditions, and usage. Using high-quality replacement parts, such as our tapered spindles, is a great way to maximize a trailer’s lifespan and service.

Semi-Trailer Tapered Spindle

Tapered spindles have a conical shape, meaning they are wider at the base and gradually taper off towards the end. This design helps evenly distribute weight and reduces stress on both the axle and bearings.

The tapered shape allows for the use of tapered roller bearings, which can handle both radial and axial loads (side thrusts). This makes them ideal for trailers that need to carry heavy loads, such as flatbeds, tankers, and refrigerated trailers.

However, tapered spindles generally require more frequent maintenance checks due to their complexity. It is important to ensure that the tapered roller bearings are properly lubricated to avoid premature failure.

Spindle Maintenance

Do You Have a Problematic Spindle?

Wheel bearing maintenance is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of commercial vehicle upkeep. Many truck and trailer owners are unaware of the importance of regular wheel bearing checks and lubrication changes. If neglected, this can lead to damaged spindles and dangerous situations as break pads can become compromised by leaking bearing lubricants and grease.

When inspecting your truck or trailer for signs of trouble, listen for unusual noises like whirring, clicking, or clunking, particularly while turning. Unusual vibrations can also be an indicator as well as visual signs like bearing grease leaking from the boot. A quick visual inspection of the inner side of the wheel’s rim will help identify any issues.
